This trilogy of works was developed during an artist residency at Gapado AiR on the tiny, remote island of Gapado, South Korea. It emerged from daily walks around the island at dawn. Through fragmented yet immersive combinations of moving image, environmental sound, musical motifs and found materials, the works explore the shifting relationships between landscape, light, weather, wildlife and traces of daily life.

Collected objects – including ceramic fragments, seashells, buoys and plastic washed ashore – were used as sound-makers and also extend the moving image into physical space. Limited access to conventional art materials during the residency led me to produce a series of three botanical drawings on discarded cardboard collected from local cafés, depicting the island’s dominant crops: barley, canola and radish.

Although each work can stand independently, they are conceived as an interconnected installation. Their differing durations, tonalities and shared harmonic language allow the soundtracks to interact, creating an evolving musical composition across the exhibition space.
