Two-channel sound, speakers, inkjet prints on paper, found objects, 2025


Abandoned is a site-responsive installation created during an artist residency at Gapado AiR on the remote island of Gapado, South Korea. It was inspired by a derelict house at the centre of the island. Initially drawn there for shelter from the island’s persistent winds, I became increasingly interested in the building as a repository of memory and as a space that reflects the island’s changing social, economic and environmental histories.

The work combines electronically transformed birdsong, recordings of the island’s electricity generator, my movements within the building and sounds produced using found materials collected on site. Together these elements form a sonic portrait of transition, absence and gradual transformation.

The sound installation is accompanied by a collection of found fragments – including wallpaper, tile and concrete – and a series of eight photographs that focus on thresholds: views framed through empty window openings that connect the quiet interior of the abandoned house with the surrounding landscape.

Together, these elements explore the traces left by previous inhabitants and the shifting boundary between the built environment and nature as architecture slowly gives way to weather, plants and wildlife.
