Two-channel sound, speakers, inkjet prints on paper, found objects, 2025
Abandoned is a sound installation created during an artist residency in Spring 2025 at Gapado AiR on the tiny, remote island of Gapado, near Jeju, South Korea.
It is inspired by a derelict house in the centre of the island and explores the traces of previous use and notions of absence and the liminal space between the manmade and nature as the human elements decay and wild plants and animals take over.
Electronically filtered sounds of birdsong, the island’s electricity generator and the artist’s own movements are combined with the sounds of found objects from the site.
The sound was displayed with a series of eight photographs that focus on thresholds – views onto the outside from empty window openings and a collection of found objects: wallpaper, tile and concrete fragments.
